The Prague duo Black Holes is dropping a new EP called Back To Black on November 15. They teamed up with British producer John Fryer (Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails) to work on the new tracks, and they recorded it all at Tajný Studio in Ústí nad Labem with producer Jan Brambůrek.
After the release of their second album and subsequent singles, the duo is back with fresh material that returns to the raw beginnings of the band and their first album No Silver Lining. However, it is immediately clear on the first listen that the rawness and intensity are now combined with electronic elements, typical of their second album Time To Say Goodbye, which was warmly received by critics and earned Black Holes a feature on the cover of Headliner magazine.
"Even at our recent shows, where we brought in some older songs, we realized how much we enjoy playing in a more raw, stripped-back way and giving the bass guitar more room to breathe, especially with our guitar sound. It just felt natural to bring the new tracks back to that guitar-driven vibe. But we didn’t want to ditch the electronic side completely, so we had fun messing around with analog effects, tweaking sounds, and experimenting. In the end, we ended up with some really cool sounds that we were super excited about, so we decided to sample them and use them in the songs. It was a blast!" says frontwoman Kate about how the new tracks came together.
"This is the first time we've worked with an international producer. It wasn’t random—John's work with Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode is totally our vibe. We just sent him a demo and waited to see if he'd reply. He did, and he liked it, which was awesome for us. We also felt like we were totally on the same page with the mix, and we're super happy with how it turned out," says Martin.
Fans will be able to hear the new songs live during a small autumn tour across the Czech Republic and abroad. On November 15, the band will perform at the Malostranská Beseda club in Prague, and on November 18, Black Holes will play at Melodka in Brno.
